Artwork
Lucy Phillips uses her artistic practice to facilitate communication – often utilising what are now considered outdated or analog systems in a digital age. These include interventions into existing communication systems and processes, such as postal correspondence, opinion polls and voting methods. Lucy discreetly intervenes into everyday routines and often works in alternative spaces, including libraries, train stations and shopping centres – allowing people to happen upon the artwork.
Lucy’s work is very much process and time based; typically involving the participation of others – whether knowingly or not. Through her practice she questions societal routines and explores the process of decision-making. She also re-evaluates things that are forgotten, overlooked or considered mundane through meticulous investigations and research processes. Lucy attempts to subvert official formalities and accepted signage to explore the thin line between genuine and imitation.
Lucy’s work is housed in Oxford University’s Hospitals Trust collection, on permanent display at the Churchill Hospital. She is an Artist Member of OVADA Associates and a-n.
